Project Number 5 Analysis

During our Wednesday critique we were told to compare and contrast the dialog between two of our classmates projects. the two projects i chose to analyze were Cassie's and Justin's.

Both Cassie's and Justin's projects seemed to convey the idea if surrounding a smaller space within a larger space. Justin's approach was to use rounded edges, and to leave a gap in the wall of each space. By doing this, his project causes the observer to think about how many spaces his project really creates.

Cassie's project takes a more angular approach to this idea of surrounding, with both of her spaces resembling the star of David. In addition, Cassie leaves no gaps in the walls of her spaces; they are all completely closed.

Cassie's and Justin's projects were also similar in that there was some dispute on whether the negative space around their projects created more than two spaces. But in the end we decided it's all about how you look at it, and that every one i going to see something differently.

Project Number 5: Dialog

For this project we were told to create two spaces that relate to, and create a dialog with each other. My first idea was to have my spaces relate through opposites. For this i created a square space that was smooth, and one that was jagged, using the skewers to create a dialog between the two. kind of like a conversation. Because my jagged cube created to many spaces i had to figure out another way to do this. It was also suggested during critique that i had to many ideas going on and that i should simplify. so i ditched jaggedness and focused on big and small, and extrusion. the pictures above document my first idea with its collage, and my second idea with its collage and orthographic drawings.

Project Number 4: Hive O' Cocoons

For this project we were told we could make anything we wanted using 12 4"x6" planes of white Bristol board, and 12 bamboo skewers. It also had to include a 12"x12" base. I chose to cut slits in all of my planes. This allowed me to integrate the skewers with my planes. this created unity between the two.
Originally I had an equilateral triangle as my base, but that wasn't working, as confirmed in critique, so I changed it to a circle with a 12" diameter. This created the look of a bee hive, and I glued two corners together on some of my planes. These looked like butterfly cocoons. Thus, I used images of these on my collage. The pointed tips of my cocoon shapes looked like leaves, so I added those to my collage as well.

Sketchbook Assignment 4

In this sketchbook assignment we were told to draw people in 5 interior spaces over fall break. We were to draw some of the space but mostly where the people are. In addition, like all of our other sketchbook assignments, these drawings were to be done in pen. The places I found to be the most useful for this assignment were Starbuck's, Cold Stone, and the patio area of a local cafe.

Project Number 3 Part 2

For this part of our third project we had to create orthographic drawings of our cubes. We were told to leave our mistakes because it shows our process.

Sketchbook Assignment 3

For this assignment we were told to draw 4 to 5 leaves in a composition 4 different ways. These consisted of the following: A detailed contour with shadows, contour, blind contour, and a negative space contour. The photos are posted in this order.

Project Number 3

For our third project we had to construct a 4" x 4"x 4" cube out of bristol board with an 8"x 8" base, and have it elevated 4" above the ground by an integral structure made from plastic drinking straws. I first made a sketch model out of cardboard on which i tested out a bunch of techniques to get the sides of the cube to stay together. My original idea was to weave a side of the cube out of straws. Then  I made this model from bristol board and found that it kept bowing when i tried to weave the  straws. In response, i decided to settle with cross beams to hold the cube off the ground. These cross beams also give the cube the appearance  of being torn apart. Although, there is still something to be desired in this project. I plan on continuing to play around with different ideas to try and improve it even more.

Project Number 2

For this project we had to create a container for a special object using paper, fabric and thread. I chose to make my container by scoring the sides of a piece of cardboard, and stitching the side together with brown thread. I used the same thread to make my loom on which i decided to weave my own fabric. My first prototype was not very effective because it didn't have a place for me to put the ring (my special object) where it wouldn't fall out. this is what brought about my second loom. The way it is woven creates a hole in the center between the 2 triangle shapes where I am then able to place my ring.
the reason I chose this ring as my special object is because a friend made it for me on a mission trip. On the mission trip we worked a lot with the homeless which inspired the tattered cardboard and the sloppy stitches. We also worked a great deal with children, which is what inspired the use of blue, and pink thread in the fabric.
My most recent change to this project is in response to comments made during our final critique of this project. I was told that my project would be more effective if the thread were brown, like the stitching on the side.

Sketchbook Assignment 2

For our second sketchbook assignment we were told to do a pure contour drawing of the Julius Foust Building here on campus. Our guidelines were as follows: We must draw the building in its entirety, NO shading, and we were allowed to use pencil as long as we kept the erasing to a minimum. I found this task challenging because as I was drawing I found myself zooming in on certain parts of the building, and I would have to go back, or start over to fix them.
